5. The Moor - channel enhancement

Aims: Involve people with their local waterbodies; Improve wildlife corridors; Manage flow

Water body: River Chess
Project description

Opportunity to remove concrete revetments, reinstate natural banks and narrow river.

The banks of a side stream and part of the main River Chess through the Moor recreation ground have been reinforced in the past through the creation of concrete revetments.  The channels have also been widened as a result of dredging. The resulting river channel is over-wide and lacks natural chalk stream form and function. There is an opportunity to remove the concrete, regrade the banks to a more natural profile and create a narrower, sinuous river channel.  This would restore river function and greatly enhance habitat at this publicly accessible site.
