20. Scotsbridge bypass channel
Aims: Improve wildlife corridors; Manage flow
Water body: River Chess
Project description
The River Chess at Scotsbridge Mill suffers from a range of problems linked to when the channel was redirected to power the mill.
The elevated nature of the channel, erosion problems, lack of management and high flows led to flooding of properties in 2014. This project aims to improve the resilience, physical characteristics and habitat quality of this stretch of the Chess, enabling fish passage, reducing flood risk and improving the public green space along the river. A bypass channel has been identified as the preferred option, and work is currently being undertaken on a detailed design, with delivery planned for 2027.
