ZSL are offering training to volunteers who are willing to monitor polluting outfalls on the River Pinn, to be delivered in person at Eastcote House Gardens.
Date: Thursday 12th March 2026
Time: 13:30 – 15:30pm
Location: Eastcote House Gardens, High Road, Pinner HA5 2FE
Details:
The Zoological Society London (ZSL) are looking for volunteers to help identify hidden pollution to improve and protect the River Pinn.
Join their Outfall Safari training day to learn how to spot and report river pollution, helping to protect and improve our local rivers. Outfall discharges are a major but frequently overlooked source of river pollution. Volunteers will survey from March to May 2026 and can choose which stretch of the river to survey and when to carry out the survey. Surveys take place from riverside paths where access and visibility allow.
All volunteers must attend this short in person training session.
Pollution can enter urban rivers through surface water outfalls (drains), often as a result of misconnected plumbing. This is a frequently overlooked source of pollution that can cause long-term, chronic damage to our rivers and wildlife.
Outfall Safaris are bankside surveys that aim to locate and assess surface water outfalls, helping to identify polluted discharges so they can be investigated and remediated. By taking part, you’ll play a direct role in improving the health of local rivers.
This training event will equip volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to take part in Outfall Safari surveys.
Who can attend:
- You must be 18 or over to attend
- Please only register if you intend to take part in surveys and can attend the training session in person
Surveys can be carried out at any time during April–May, but must take place following at least 48 hours of dry weather, so flexibility is essential.
The training will include:
- An overview of water quality issues along the River Pinn
- Information on surface water outfalls and how they become polluted
- Guidance on assessing outfalls using the project apps and uploading data to the database
- A health and safety briefing
